General Motors Co., the US automaker that stopped selling cars in India two years ago, has agreed to transfer the assets and employees of its engineering design centre in Bengaluru to Tata Consultancy Services Ltd.

TCS will take over the assets of GM Technical Center-India and about 1,300 employees, the two companies said in a statement. These include teams focused on propulsion systems, vehicle engineering, controls development, testing, creative design and special projects.

Established in 2004, the technical centre contributes to GM’s global programmes. It houses a design studio and an engineering centre with in-house electronics hardware and software testing and validation infrastructure.

The deal is part of a broader agreement under which India’s biggest software services exporter and will provide engineering design services to GM’s global vehicle programmes over the next five years.

The companies didn’t disclose any financial details of the deal.

Brian McMurray, vice president of engineering and operations at GMTC-I, said the design and engineering centre had contributed to a number of innovations in GM’s global vehicle portfolio over the years.

“The design and engineering teams in Bengaluru will continue to play an important role in GM’s core business. This partnership will make both companies stronger: GM will benefit from the scale and cross-sectoral knowledge of TCS, while TCS will benefit from the influx of world-class engineering talent,” McMurray said.

The transaction and handover are likely to be completed by the end of September.
