Technology firm Intel Corporation has launched a new chip aiming to power up applications that can process data on the device itself instead of using the cloud.

Named Intel Xeon D-2100, the processor is designed for zero-lag Edge computing, so called because it computes data at the edge of the network, in other words on the source or the device itself.

“The Intel Xeon D-2100 processor allows service providers and enterprises to deliver the maximum amount of compute intelligence at the Edge or web tier while expending the least power,” Sandra Rivera, senior vice president and general manager of the Network Platforms Group at Intel, said in a statement.

The new chip could be of immense help in connected cars and self-driving systems, where on-board systems need to take decisions in real time. The new chip could help Intel better compete with Nvidia, which dominates the market for autonomous driving systems with its Drive PX and Pegasus tech platforms.

The chip could also find its way into Internet of Things and home automation systems. Besides, the company said, the processor can reduce congestion in mobile networks and effectively enable 5G-connected cars, smart stadiums, and retail and medical solutions. 5G is fifth-generation telecom services.

A Xeon D-2100 chip comprises 18 cores and 100 Gigabits per second of cryptography, decryption and encryption acceleration. This product will be supported by software security updates.
