Cab-hailing major Uber Technologies Inc has appointed former chief marketing officer of furniture e-tailer Urban Ladder, Sanjay Gupta, as head of marketing in India.

VCCircle reported over three months ago that Gupta was joining Uber.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Gupta—who left Urban Ladder in April this year—took over as Uber’s marketing head in May. He will spearhead the initiatives to strengthen the Uber brand in the country, the firm said in a statement.

“I am looking forward to working with the team at Uber and take it to its next phase of growth...” Gupta said.

Prior to joining Urban Ladder, he was head marketing – wellness & youth at fast-moving consumer goods firm Marico. He has also worked at IT company Accenture.

Early this year, Uber hired former CEO of BSE Ltd Madhu Kannan as chief business officer for India and emerging markets.

The San Francisco-based Uber, which is locked in a fierce battle with homegrown cab-hailing firm Ola, has been strengthening its senior leadership team in the country. In September last year, it hired former journalist Shweta Rajpal Kohli as head of public policy.

Following the exit of Travis Kalanick as chief executive, media reports said Uber may put its expansion plans for India on the back burner. However, in a recent media interaction with Mint, Uber India president Amit Jain said Kalanick’s exit as CEO will not hamper the firm’s India operations and that it will continue to invest in the country. Jain also claimed Uber India had grown 2.5 times in terms of trips and gross merchandise volume since June last year.

Last month, VCCircle reported that Uber injected $7.9 million (Rs 51.64 crore) into its Indian operations.
