Umang Bedi, managing director for India & South Asia at Facebook, has resigned and will leave the company by the end of the year.

“We confirm that Umang Bedi will be leaving his role and Facebook at the end of this year. He’s built a really strong team and business during his time with us, and we wish him all the best,” the social network said in a statement.

Bedi resigned a little over a year after joining the company to head its operations in India and South Asia. He had joined Facebook in June 2016, succeeding Krithiga Reddy, who moved to the company's headquarters in the US.

A tech industry veteran, Bedi had previously worked at Adobe and Symantec in senior positions. At Facebook, he led several initiatives, including many business-to-business partnerships.

Though the company statement did not mention his successor, several media reports said Sandeep Bhushan, director, consumer and media, South Asia, will take over as the interim head.

Facebook has a strong focus on India, which, according to recent reports, now has the highest number of Facebook users at around 240 million.
