Swajal Water Pvt Ltd, a Gurgaon-based water purification solutions firm, has raised $1.2 million (Rs 7.5 crore) in its Series A round of funding led by Abhishek Gupta. Existing investors like solar engineering and consultancy company Saurya EnerTech among others also participated in the round.

Swajal will use the funding for innovation in energy efficient and low cost community based water purification systems.

"We are looking to position ourselves as the Google equivalent of water purification. With a focus on robust engineering, ease of use, reliability and water quality assurance rather than pushing a 60 year old technology into the market," said Vibha Tripathi, CEO of Swajal.

Founded in 2011 by Vibha, an IIT Kanpur alumna, Swajal uses solar power to clean water. The system is also equipped with online monitoring system that allows the company to monitor quality of water and other parameters.

The company is planning to expand its sales and service presence across India and to other emerging markets by next year.

Emergent Ventures India Pvt Ltd, an advisory firm for sustainability and renewable technologies and Felix Advisory Services, a boutique consultancy firm based out of Gurgaon providing M&A, taxation and investment banking services to small and mid-sized firms, were the advisors on this deal.
