Pharma firm Kopran to sell loss-making consumer care unit

Mumbai-based pharmaceutical firm Kopran Ltd is planning to sell its consumer care unit, which manufactures and sells oral care and lifestyle products, as per a stock market disclosure.

Kopran’s consumer care division manufactures Sparkle brand of toothpaste, deodorant, talc, face wash, lotion and moisturiser.

The unit has been struggling to grow. It recorded revenue of Rs 2.4 crore with segment loss of Rs 2.6 crore in the year ended March 31, 2014. Last year, its revenue inched up to Rs 2.54 crore with a segment loss of Rs 2.8 crore. This contributed less than 1 per cent of its overall turnover.

Kopran offers tablets, capsules, liquids, injectables and active pharmaceutical ingredients such as sterile cephalosporins. The company is part of Parijat Group, which has business interests in real estate, marine logistics, packaging, petrochemicals and automobile dealership.
