Karan Adani, son of Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, has been appointed as the chief executive officer of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd with effect from January 1.

He will take over the top job from Sudipta Bhattacharya, who is moving to the US as the group CEO for North America, Adani Ports said in a stock exchange filing. Bhattacharya had joined Adani four years ago and led several strategic initiatives.

The filing said that Karan, who is currently executive director, aims to “build the group’s identity around an integrated logistics business model”.

An economics graduate from Purdue University, US, Karan looks after strategic development of Adani Ports across India and has been involved in managing various port operations for the firm since 2009.

Adani Ports builds and operates the Mundra port in Gujarat and a multi-product special economic zone. It also operates ports and terminals at Hazira, Dahej and Kandla in Gujarat, as well as in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and Mormugao, Goa, among others.
