3i Group Plc's associate director Nikhil Gahrotra has joined Banyan Tree Finance Pvt Ltd, a firm focusing on structured private equity investments in mid-market companies. Gahrotra, who was with 3i Group for over five years, joins Banyan Tree as director at a time when it is raising its second India-focused fund. BanyanTree Finance is the advisor to BanyanTree Growth Capital ($250 million corpus PE Fund).

Gahrotra has over nine years of experience in the financial services industry, of which the last seven years have been in private equity in India. Since 2007, he has worked with 3i and jointly led their growth capital business in India. He represented 3i on the boards of BVG India Ltd, one of country's largest domestic facilities management services business and OOH Media Pvt Ltd, India’s largest LCD based outdoor advertising network.

3i Group recently said that it will cease making any fresh PE investment in India and wants to focus on the existing portfolio as part of its new strategy.

Prior to 3i, Gahrotra was instrumental in establishing the India office for Q Investments, a $4 billion US-based multi-strategy fund. At Q Investments, he focused on private equity and structured investing across sectors. Before that, Gahrotra was with Citigroup’s investment banking team in India where he advised on M&A and equity/equity-linked capital raising of over $2 billion for some of India’s largest companies.

Gahrotra graduated in the Dean's List in the MBA programme offered by the Indian School of Business, where he specialised in Finance and Technology.
