Coming from a family of film producers, Namit Malhotra was destined to work in the same space. At the age of 21, he started Prime Focus, a special effects company along with Huzefa Lokhandwala, Prakash Kurup and Merzin Tavaria in 1997. Today Prime Focus is one of a few companies to have cracked the Hollywood code, and has offered its visual effects and 3D conversion for a number of blockbuster movies such as Avatar, Star Wars and Clash of the Titans.

The company operates across India, North America and Europe (via its ‘world sourcing’ business model); over 60 per cent of its business comes from overseas. It already raised two rounds of funding in 2013—$10 million from AID Partners Capital and $53 million from Macquarie Asia Pacific PE Fund.

In an exclusive chat with VCCircle, Malhotra talks about the company, clearing debts from its books, acquisitions in the overseas market (in the visual effects space), and listing in the US market.
