Drone startup Garuda Aerospace, on Monday announced that it has roped in cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni as brand ambassador. He will also be one of their shareholders.

The company said in April that it was working on a model to sell drones to village-level entrepreneurs or pesticide and fertilisers retailers. Chennai-based Garuda Aerospace had recently announced its plans to support agriculture.

Founded in 2015 by Jayaprakash, Garuda Aerospace is a drone-as-a-service (DaaS) startup. It designs, manufactures and customizes drones for various use cases such as deliveries, disaster management and agricultural applications, among others.

Garuda Aerospace deploys 300 drones and 500 pilots across 26 cities. The startup is among the four drone startups that had been selected by online food delivery service Swiggy for a pilot project involving supply runs for its grocery service Instamart. In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had virtually inaugurated the drone manufacturing facilities of Garuda Aerospace at Manesar in Gurugram and Chennai.

"MSD is the epitome of dedication and I firmly believe that having Captain Cool on our Cap table adds tremendous value which will motivate our team to perform better,” Jayaprakash said.

Last year, Elon Musk recognised the company's operational expertise on Twitter. The startup has also forayed into the defence sector by bagging a significant order for 33 anti-drone systems for the Ministry of Defence.
