Khosla Ventures Backs Music Band

Vinod Khosla is interested not just in clean energy these days. He likes music companies too. Khosla Ventures' latest investment is in San Francisco's GarageBand.com, an independent music community. Khosla has put in $2.5 million in first-round funding in the company.

Khosla Ventures of Menlo Park, Calif., and partner David Weiden led the round, with additional new investors including: Bob Pittman, co-founder of MTV and former head of AOL; Herbert Allen III of Allen & Co. LLC of New York; and other individuals from the music, Internet and media industries.

Founded in 1999, the company will use the capital to launch its new social music discovery service, iLike, and to expand existing services by including mainstream artists, incorporating links among friends and offering tools targeted at iPod and MySpace users. [Via TheDeal.com]
