Why are private equity firms striking VC-type deals?

A number of private equity firms have, of late, sealed small-ticket deals, which were the preserve of venture capital firms until a few years ago. While many PE firms have made mid- to late-stage bets on companies, some have also dabbled in early-stage VC type of deals.
