Uber’s global tax head takes additional charge at India operations

Cab-hailing company Uber Technologies Inc. has appointed Francois Chadwick, its global head of tax and accounting, as additional director of India operations, documents filed with the ministry of corporate affairs show.

The filings also show that Karen Walker, global controller at Uber handling the finance function, has resigned as director from Uber India Systems Pvt. Ltd, citing personal and unavoidable circumstances. Walker's LinkedIn profile indicates that she joined the organisation as global controller in December 2013 and worked there till December 2016.

Chadwick, a British national, has headed tax and accounting functions at Uber since June 2016, and works out of the company’s San Francisco headquarters. He earlier worked in the taxation vertical of KPMG.

It is not clear what Chadwick's appointment means for Uber’s India operations, and what prompted the move. However, it's possible that it was to adhere to guidelines under the Companies Act.

"Unfortunately, Uber will be unable to comment on this as of now. [We] will get in touch with you as soon as we have some information to share," an Uber spokesperson said.

In recent times, Uber’s local operations have been marked by driver strikes protesting against dwindling incentives and falling incomes. Last week, the company obtained a restraining order from the Bombay High Court preventing dissenting taxi unions from disrupting its operations in Mumbai.

At the global level, too, Uber has drawn a lot of flak since last month, after a former employee claimed she was sexually harassed at the decacorn.
