Avani Davda has resigned as chief executive officer of Tata Starbucks, a 50:50 joint venture between the world's largest coffee chain firm and Tata Global Beverages, according to a stock market disclosure.

The company said Avani, who has been heading the Indian operations of the American coffee chain since its launch in the country three years ago, has decided to pursue other opportunities.

She will be replaced by Sumi Ghosh, who served as vice president of the US mid-west region for Starbucks. Ghosh has been with Starbucks as a group for the last eight years and comes with over three decades of retail industry experience.

Starbucks, which opened its first India store in October 2012, now runs 78 outlets. The JV firm added 29 stores during the year ended March 31, 2015, taking the store count to 72 stores and has added more units since then, though not as aggressively as the previous year.

The coffee chain market in India is dominated by the Bangalore-based Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd, which runs India's top coffee chain under the Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) brand. The company recently went public.

Others in the business include Barista and Costa Coffee.
