Spencer Stuart’s Anjali Bansal to join TPG; former BCCL CEO Ravi Dhariwal becomes advisor

The mid-market growth equity investment platform of US-based private equity major TPG, TPG Growth, has appointed Anjali Bansal as managing director to look after human capital-related needs of its portfolio firms in Asia and Africa.

“Anjali Bansal will be joining us in a week's time. We are doing more control deals which require lot of help on human capital side, to bolster team with talent,” Vish Narain, ‎partner at TPG Growth, told VCCircle.

Anjali was instrumental in setting up operations of global executive search firm Spencer Stuart in India. She quit the firm in May this year.

She completed her graduation in computer engineering from Gujarat University. After a brief stint at Indian Space Research Organisation, she completed her post-graduation in International Affairs from Columbia University, where she majored in international finance and business. She later joined management consulting firm McKinsey & Company in New York.

She has also worked at executive search firm Egon Zehnder before joining Spencer Stuart.

Her move to TPG was first reported by The Economic Times.

Meanwhile, TPG has also roped in Ravi Dhariwal, former CEO of one of India's top media houses Bennett, Coleman & Co Ltd (BCCL), as a senior advisor. Dhariwal joined the firm last quarter.

BCCL is the private holding company of The Times of India Group, one of the largest media organisations in the country with print publications like The Times of India and Filmfare; TV channels like Times Now and Movies Now besides a host of business interest in areas like FM radio, internet commerce, etc. It also has an ad-for-equity investment arm Brand Capital.

Last year, BCCL had named former Bharti Retail CEO Raj Jain as chief executive to replace Dhariwal who was retiring from the firm.

Dhariwal started his career with Unilever in India in 1977, and worked for the firm in India and Australia for over 12 years, mostly in sales and marketing management. He also worked with PepsiCo.

He is a chemical engineer from IIT Kanpur and MBA from IIM, Calcutta.

He joins a list of close to five dozen global advisors to TPG Growth of which around half a dozen are of Indian origin.

Manish Chokhani, former CEO of Axis Capital, is also a senior advisor to the firm since 2012.

Last year, Vishal Bali, former CEO of Fortis Healthcare, had joined TPG to head its healthcare investment in Asia. He serves as an advisor in TPG and separately also runs his own independent health care firm Medwell Ventures.

Last year, TPG Growth also named Rajeev Chitrabhanu, managing director and CEO at JM Financial Services, and Mahadevan Narayanamoni from advisory firm Grant Thornton, as advisors.

TPG Growth has invested in companies including Flexituff and Sutures India in the country. TPG as a group also has investments in several other firms.
