Samsung to hire at least 1,000 engineers for projects on AI, IoT

South Korean electronics giant Samsung on Thursday said it was planning to hire at least 1,000 engineers from top institutes for three research and development (R&D) facilities across the country, according to a report.

"Samsung is extremely bullish on R&D in India. We have been here for over 22 years. The three R&D centres in India work on several cutting-edge technologies," Dipesh Shah, Samsung global senior vice-president and managing director, Samsung R&D Institute India-Bangalore Pvt. Ltd, was quoted as saying by news agency Press Trust of India.

According to the report, Samsung is expected to hire these engineers from premier technology institutions such as Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology, Delhi College of Engineering, and BITS (Birla Institute of Technology & Science) Pilani, with 300 of these techies coming from 23 IITs in the country.

"A majority of the engineers will be hired for domains such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, signal processing, computer vision, mobile security, biometrics and others. There is a large need for talent," Shah was quoted as saying.

Further, Shah said hiring efforts would focus on picking people from regular computer science streams and other branches such as electrical engineering, mathematics and computing, applied mechanics, statistics, and others. In 2017, Samsung had hired 800 engineers for its R&D facilities in India, with 300 students coming from IITs.

The company owns research facilities in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Noida. While the R&D unit in Delhi works on Samsung's self-developed Tizen OS (operating system) and sophisticated TV sets, the Noida unit conducts research on biometrics, multimedia, data security and mobile software development.

The largest Indian unit in Bengaluru researches artificial intelligence, machine learning, and Internet of Things.
