Ravi Venkatesan, Chairman and corporate vice-president of India operations of software major Microsoft, has resigned from his position at the firm to pursue other opportunities.  Various media reports, quoting a statement from Microsoft, said a successor is expected to be announced soon. Venkatesan was with Microsoft India for seven years.

Venkatesan told Wall Street Journal that "he's taking a sabbatical for a few months to work on a book on why so few multinational companies have built a sizable business in India and what the lessons are from those that succeeded."

“Ravi came to Microsoft India at a very critical time. He has since architected our growth, making this among the fastest growing markets for us. He has laid a strong foundation which, I believe, will help us to continue our business successes,” said Microsoft International President Jean-Philippe Courtois in the statement. Venkatesan was responsible for Microsoft’s marketing, operational and business development efforts in India.

Venkatesan has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (1985), an MS in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University (1986) and a MBA from Harvard University (1992) where he was a Baker Scholar.
