Meru eyes international commuters with Taxis G7 tie-up

20 October, 2015

Meru Cabs has tied up with Taxis G7 to enable cab services for Indian travelers in several global cities through the French company’s eCab mobile app.

Taxis G7’s customers would also be able to use the Meru network while traveling in India, the companies said in a statement.

Taxis G7 runs a fleet of about 13,000 affiliated taxis across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland and Canada. By 2015-end, the eCab network is expected to cover 50 cities across three continents. Meru operates in 23 cities.

Meru, which competes with taxi-hailing apps Uber and Ola among other players, is one of India’s oldest cab companies. Recently, it ventured into the car-pooling space for customers.

In March, it had raised Rs 300 crore ($50 million) from existing investor India Value Fund Advisors (IVFA). Techcircle.in had reported that Meru was also in talks with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba for funding.

With this tie-up, Meru joins domestic rival Ola in sewing arrangements with international peers. In September, Uber’s Chinese rival Didi Kuaidi Joint Co invested an undisclosed amount in Ola. Didi Kuaidi’s investment in the Mumbai-based firm happened shortly after the Chinese company put $100 million in Lyft, a San Francisco-based ride-sharing app that competes with Uber in the US.

The San Francisco-based Uber Technologies Inc said in July the company will invest $1 billion in India for expansion.
