Marriott, the largest US hotel chain, said in November that it planned to expand the number of hotels it has in India to 100 over five years, from 11 properties at the time. It also said then that it would add seven brands across India including Ritz Carlton and Fairfield Inn.

The Wall Street Journal said that Marriott would hold a 30 per cent stake in the joint venture, which will decrease to 10 per cent over time. It also said the venture was expected to operate about 15 midtier hotels in India by 2015.
