Luthra & Luthra hires ex-judge as counsel

Bharat Chugh, former metropolitan magistrate at Delhi District Courts, Dwarka, is joining law firm Luthra & Luthra Law Offices as counsel in the firm’s litigation and dispute team.

“We are excited to have Bharat on board and welcome him to the Luthra family. We look forward to the opportunity to work together,” Rajiv Luthra, founder and managing partner of Luthra & Luthra, said in a statement.

An alumnus of Jamia Millia Islamia, Chugh did his master’s from Kurukshetra University and was also research assistant at London School of Economics (LSE). He practised as a lawyer for a couple of years before moving to serve as a judge.

“Bharat took oath of office as a metropolitan magistrate in 2013. Since then he has presided over independent courts and developed a keen insight and a strong conceptual grounding in criminal and civil litigation,” said Luthra.

Bharat disposed of over 3,800 cases in the first one-and-a-half years of his judicial career, according to the statement.

“As litigations and commercial disputes are becoming complex, law firms are choosing experts with ground knowledge over those with just a legal degree. Going forward, the sector may see recruitments from non-legal segments as well,” said a senior partner of a Delhi-based law firm on the condition of anonymity. “Many law firms are trying to hire economists and finance experts as well,” he said.

“Bharat will bring a fresh and unique perspective and tremendous insight to Luthra’s litigation team,” said Aneesh Patnaik, head of litigation consulting at Vahura.

Luthra & Luthra has been expanding aggressively of late. Currently, the firm has over 50 partners and over 300 lawyers. The firm has offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
