Law firm Khaitan & Co has appointed Nalina Mayegowda as a disputes partner in its Bangalore office, taking the total number of partners and directors to 107.

Mayegowda was earlier employed as a dispute resolution and litigation partner of mid-sized law firm Poovaya & Co.

“The work Nalina undertakes for the firm will not only help maintain the firm’s momentum, but also build on its rapidly increasing reputation in dispute resolution practice,” Rabindra Jhunjhunwala, partner, Khaitan & Co, said in a statement.

Mayegowda, a 1995 University of Mysore graduate, had joined Fox Mondal Little in 2002 as senior associate and, in 2007, had moved to Poovaya & Co. “She will bring fresh and unique perspective at Khaitan & Co,” said Aneesh Patnaik, head of litigation consulting at legal search firm Vahura.

The move by Khaitan & Co comes at a time when most major firms are strengthening their dispute resolution practice, anticipating higher demand following changes in many laws. The existing economic environment, where lenders are tightening their grips on defaulting companies to recover dues, could also open up more opportunities for the sector.

In December, former metropolitan magistrate at Delhi District Courts in Dwarka, Bharat Chugh, had joined Luthra & Luthra Law Offices as counsel to the firm’s dispute team.

In November, Akshay Kishore, an arbitration counsel with Ashurst LLP in Singapore, had decided to join law firm Economic Law Practice’s dispute resolution team in Mumbai as associate partner. Similarly in mid-2016, Zia Mody lead firm AZB & Partners had poached VP Singh, Mumbai partner of Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, to head its litigation portfolio in Delhi.
