Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co (Amarchand Mangaldas) has appointed a specialist competition and regulatory lawyer John Handoll as a senior advisor, European and Competition Law in the firm’s competition law practice.

Prior to joining Amarchand, he was working with William Fry as a senior partner, head of competition & regulation department.

He is also a co-author of the Irish chapter in American Bar Association “Competition Laws outside the United States” and was, until recently, heading the competition & regulation practice in a major Dublin-based law firm.

Handoll has represented clients in state aid procedures before the European Commission and has diverse experience advising on restrictive agreements, the application of EU and national exemptions, application of Irish and EU merger control rules, public procurement, telecommunications and EU rules on free movement.

On his appointment, Pallavi Shroff, senior partner and head competition law practice, Amarchand Mangaldas, said, “It is not often that you can hire an expert with 32 years experience in a niche and new practice area in India. John’s addition as an advisor to our firm is a real coup. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of European competition law, which will bolster our existing team of twenty one dedicated and experienced competition lawyers.”

Handoll obtained an LLB degree (Hons.) from Manchester University in 1978. He qualified as an Irish solicitor in 1997.

Last month, the firm had appointed former Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) executive director Usha Narayanan as counsel for it general corporate and financial regulatory practice at its Mumbai office.
