Infosys’ head of Americas Ashok Vemuri quits

IT services major Infosys Ltd disclosed on Wednesday that Ashok Vemuri, a board member of the company who is currently also head of Americas and global head of manufacturing and engineering services at the company, has resigned from the firm.

Separate media reports suggested Vemuri is joining iGate as its chief executive after the Nasdaq-listed firm sacked its previous chief Phaneesh Murthy three months ago. Murthy, himself a former Infosys veteran, was sacked over non-disclosure of his relationship with an employee of iGate.

Vemuri’s exit shakes up the top management as he was one of the top contenders to take over as chief executive after SD Shibulal's term ends in 2015. He could have been the first chief of the company who was not also a co-founder of Infosys.

Infosys said Sanjay Jalona, currently the regional head for manufacturing in North America, will take over as the global head of manufacturing.

Vemuri's resignation comes after two other top functionaries also quit the company over a month. Infosys global sales head Basab Pradhan had quit last month to join a California-based cloud computing startup Cliqr. Infosys vice president and financial services head for the Americas, Sudhir Chaturvedi, had also put in his papers to join NIIT Technologies as COO.

All these exits are believed to be a result of the organisational restructuring by Infosys executive chairman Narayana Murthy, who came back in an executive role in June in order to steer back the fortunes of Infosys which has been facing severe competition from players like Cognizant Technologies.

However, Murthy has also made new appointments in the firm’s executive council by bringing in Ranganath D Mavinakere, Binod Hampapur Rangadore and Nithyanandan Radhakrishnan.
