IndusLaw poaches two partners, five other executives from HSA

Law firm IndusLaw has beefed up its New Delhi office by hiring seven executives including two partners from HSA Advocates.

It appointed Navin Syiem and Avirup Nag as partners, Abhishek Bhalla as principal associate, Shraddha Malhotra as senior associate, and Rohan Gosh, Niyati Bhatt and Shruti Barua as associates, the firm said in a statement on Monday.

IndusLaw was the advisor for private equity and venture capital deals in 2015 when it advised online marketplace Snapdeal, cab-hailing firm Ola, hotels aggregator OYO and classifieds site Quikr in their significant funding rounds.

“The team will significantly enhance the firm’s existing corporate, project and project finance capability, complementing Nishant Singh and Priyanka Roy in Mumbai and Ran Chakrabarti in New Delhi,” said Suneeth Katarki, a senior partner with the firm’s Bangalore office.

Syiem graduated from the National Law School, Bangalore, and is dual qualified in India and England and Wales, with about 15 years of experience. He specialises in banking and finance, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, joint ventures and capital markets.

Syiem’s work spans a range of sectors including telecommunications, energy, oil and gas, film and media and manufacturing. Syiem began his career with AZB and spent time with Trilegal and GE Commercial Finance before moving to Dubai, where he worked with Afridi & Angell and Ashurst.

Nag is also a graduate of the National Law School and holds a joint postgraduate degree in law from the universities of Vienna, Hamburg and Bologna, for which he earned the European Union Erasmus Mundus Scholarship. Nag has about 10 years of experience specialising in energy, infrastructure and natural resources. He advises clients on project development, supply and regulatory issues in the power and natural gas sectors and M&A in the energy and infrastructure sector.

Prior to joining HSA Advocates in 2012, Nag was a counsel at Trilegal and spent two years with Herbert Smith Freehills in its London office. Bhalla had joined HSA in 2014 from Phoenix Legal.

HSA now has nine partners and seven associate partners. IndusLaw now has 15 partners and over 80 associates across four offices in Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai.
