Indian Premier League COO Sundar Raman quits

Indian Premier League (IPL) chief operating officer Sundar Raman has resigned.

Raman, whose role in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal is being re-evaluated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will formally exit the board on November 5.

At the time of filing this report, neither Rajeev Shukla, chairman of IPL, nor Raman could be reached over the phone.

The fact that Raman had been allowed to retain his position by the board had been criticised by newly elected BCCI president Shashank Manohar.

Since Manohar took charge of BCCI, Raman's future as the COO had become uncertain, especially in view of Manohar's past statements to the media.

On July 19, 2015 while speaking to The Indian Express newspaper, Manohar had said that in order to restore the faith of people in IPL and the game, Raman needs to go.

“Raman should have gone immediately after the Mudgal Committee report found him prima facie guilty of wrongdoings. He ought to have stepped down immediately at that time,” he had said.

Last month, Raman had made a presentation to Manohar on IPL and its way of functioning.

The IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal involving a few cricketers, Chennai Super Kings team principal and then BCCI president, N Srinivasan’s son-in-law, Gurunath Meiyappan, actor Vindu Dara Singh and a few more people was unearthed in 2013.

During the course of the investigation conducted by former chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Mukul Mudgal, Raman maintained his position that Meiyappan was not a team official. But this was rejected by the report filed by the Mudgal committee.

Later in April 2014, the court ordered that all IPL related matters would be handled by the then interim-BCCI president Sunil Gavaskar, who said that he was evaluating Raman's role in the scandal.
