In a move to ensure more transparency, the selection panel for appointment of Competition Commission chairman and members would now have to provide short-listed names "in order of merit".

Earlier, the selection process involved names being given by the panel without any specific order of merit.

Changes have also been made in the process for selecting Competition Appellate Tribunal (Compat) chairman and members.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) keeps a tab on unfair business practices across sectors while Compat is the appellate authority to hear appeals filed related to its rulings.

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has made changes to the selection rules through notifications issued last month.

MCA is the administrative ministry for CCI.

With the revised norms, the concerned selection committee would have to provide up to three names of eligible candidates in "order of merit" in case there is more than one person in the race for a particular post at the regulator as well as the tribunal.

The move is expected to bring in more transparency to the overall selection process.

MCA has notified the Competition Commission of India (Term of the Selection Committee and the Manner of Selection of Panel of Names) Amendment Rules, 2014.

Under the rules, the panel shall devise its own procedure for selecting the persons for inclusion in the panel of names to be recommended for appointment.

The panel can only suggest a maximum of three names for each post.
