Fortis Healthcare Ltd, the second-largest hospital chain in the country, has reappointed Bhavdeep Singh as chief executive officer, according to a stock market disclosure.

He takes over a role left vacant last November when Aditya Vij had resigned as CEO. Vij, who had been CEO for India business unit of the company since mid-2011, had taken over the top role after Vishal Bali quit as group CEO of Fortis in 2013. Fortis had operations overseas in Southeast Asia and Australia, which it virtually exited recently.

Singh was CEO of the hospital chain between 2009 and 2011 before quitting to join Ahold, a Netherlands-based $26 billion retailer with almost 800 stores. He was initially EVP HR there and then went on to head US operations and new formats.

Before his first innings with Fortis, he was with Reliance Retail and Spencer's.

With over 30 years of experience, Singh has held senior executive roles in HR, retail and healthcare. He has worked across multiple geographies.

He completed several certified courses in leadership and executive management from premier institutions such as Harvard Business School, Cornell University, University of Hartford, Dial Institute of Management and St Joe's University in the US.

“Importantly, he brings continuity to the role and a proven track-record with a successful previous innings at Fortis as CEO between 2009 and 2011,” Fortis Healthcare's executive chairman Malvinder Singh said.
