Fortis Acquires Stake in Mauritius Based Hospital, Clinique Darné

Fortis Healthcare Ltd has forayed into the international healthcare market. The Delhi based healthcare major has partnered with Novelife Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mauritian Industrial group CIEL to jointly acquire a controlling stake in Clinique Darné, a Mauritius based private hospital. The hospital has now been renamed Fortis Clinique Darné.  Fortis and Novelife Ltd. have reportedly picked up a 58% stake in the Mauritian hospital for $7 million. 

Fortis, through this acquisition not only plans to enter the Mauritian market but also plans to tap the country's large Indian origin population. According to the company release, many Mauritians have to travel to other countries for high end treatment. This will enable Fortis to leverage medical value travel by creating a gateway to Fortis Network of hospitals within India, as also develop Fortis Clinique Darné as a hub for Medical Tourism in Mauritius.

Fortis has a network of 24 hospitals across India. Established in 1996, Fortis Healthcare Ltd., now operates in Delhi, Jaipur, Noida, Mohali (Chandigarh), Amritsar, Faridabad, Chennai,and Raipur. The healthcare giant had acquired the Delhi Based Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre Limited in September 2005.

Fortis Clinique Darné, with an installed bed capacity of 120 beds, is the only hospital in Mauritius that undertakes cardiac surgeries. The hospital offers various multi speciality services including Orthopedics and Neuro Sciences. 

CIEL group is a Mauritius based industrial and investment group operating in the Indian Ocean and Sub-Saharan Africa, with a turnover of over $310 million and 22,000 employees.
