Former cricket captain Sourav Ganguly to bat for new business ventures

Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, who hails from a rich business family, is looking to expand his family’s business into new ventures, including education, as per a Mint report.

For his new venture, Ganguly has hired a management graduate from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C) among other first recruits. He went to IIM-C to hire a student for a niche brand management and marketing role.

“We were given the impression that the person hired will be helping Ganguly build an enterprise out of his brand equity. The graduate, who signed up to join the cricketer’s firm, doesn’t have any prior work experience,” a spokesperson for IIM-C told Mint.

An unnamed associate of Ganguly said, “As he is getting into new business segments such as education, he does not want to depend on agents and brand management firms.”

Ganguly is not the first cricketer to don a businessman’s hat. Sachin Tendulkar has stakes in various ventures and most recently invested in online travel agency Musafir.com. He also holds a stake in celebrity merchandise and brand extension firm Universal Collectabillia Pvt Ltd.

Zaheer Khan and Kapil Dev had set up their restaurants while  Mahendra Singh Dhoni also started fitness business along with his business manager Arun Pandey. Yuvraj Singh has a sports academy.
