Barclays Capital, the investment banking arm of Barclays Bank Plc., has appointed Bhavtosh Vajpayee as managing director and head of equities for its India office. Vajpayee will lead and develop Barclays Capital’s India equity research, sales and trading business. He will be based in Mumbai and will report to Mike Di Iorio, head of equities, Asia Pacific.

Vajpayee joins Barclays Capital from CLSA where he has worked for the last 10 years. Of late, he has been the head of technology research at CLSA. He also worked as a technology (software and IT Services) analyst for the All-Asia Institutional Investor Research Survey during 2008-2010. Prior to this appointment, Vajpayee worked with JM Morgan Stanley and specialised in corporate finance.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Bhavtosh to Barclays Capital,” said Di Iorio. “His expertise will provide great impetus to the development of our equities business in India. Providing our clients with somebody like Bhavtosh’s industry profile and experience was imperative and we expect to make further quality hires in the coming months as we look to build a robust, best-in-class equities business in India,” he added.

That’s why we will continue to invest in the best talent and technology to establish leading equities businesses in the major Asia-Pacific markets. By the end of 2011, we expect to establish fully operational equities sales, trading and research businesses in India, Taiwan and Korea, alongside our existing equities hubs in Hong Kong and Japan,” added Di Iorio.
