In another move towards consolidation in the Indian legal space, Mumbai and Delhi-based law firm AZB & Partners has acquired Bangalore-based Anup S. Shah Law Firm. The deal would strengthen AZB's operations in southern India. With this acquisition, AZB & Partners has got two new partners, which has now gone up to 19, reports Mint.
Last month, J. Sagar Associates (JSA) said that the entire practice of M&C Partners, a leading law firm of Bangalore, will merge with itself. Before that India's ALMT Legal tied up with UK-based Clyde & Co, and the two firms are also said to be open to a merger when India's legal system opens up.
AZB & Partners also entered into a "best friend's agreement" with UK-based Clifford Chance earlier this year. AZB & Partners comprises of senior corporate lawyers like Delhi-based Ajay Bahl, Zia Mody and Bahram Vakil.
Abhijit Joshi of AZB & Partners told VCCircle in an email that the merger will help AZB & Partners to expand its presence in the region, along with offices in Hyderabad and Chennai.
According to the report, Anup S. Shah, after whom the law firm is named, brought in a number of real estate clients including listed companies Sobha Developers and Purvankara to the AZB fold as well as 15 associates with him to the Bangalore office. The strength of AZB’s Bangalore office has now increased to about 40 lawyers.
AZB & Partners, which has about 330 employees including an integrated team of at least 240 legal professionals across Mumbai, Delhi (Noida) and Bangalore, offers a combination of legal and transactional expertise. Its domestic and international clients include both private and listed companies, including Fortune 500 firms, multinationals, investment banks and private equity funds.
