Attracting investments key to making quality education accessible; hear experts @ News Corp VCCircle Education Investment Summit

By TEAM VCC

  • 15 Nov 2016

The education sector in India is expanding immensely. The schooling segment is anticipated to amount to $144 billion by 2020, from $95.8 billion in 2015. With 666 universities and over 39,000 colleges and 21.5 million enrollments (the third highest globally), India has set a high standard for other countries.

However, despite the intent and infrastructure, millions of children and individuals do not have access to high quality education. While the government agencies and private institutions are putting in dedicated efforts to both increase the scale and quality of education, a joint effort resulting in relevant policies and adequate funding is a must. Considering that industry leaders, entrepreneurs and investors have important roles to play in expanding education opportunities and offerings, News Corp VCCircle is bringing these stakeholders together at the Education Investment Summit 2017, scheduled for 18th November 2017 at Hotel Westin, Gurgaon.

Ms. Roopa Kudva, Partner and Managing Director of Omidyar Network India Advisors, will be opening this conference with her keynote address on education investment opportunities that hold promise in India. “At Omidyar Network, we believe there are few more direct pathways to opportunity than education, and are investing in high potential, scalable solutions for students from low-and middle-income families,” said Kudva. “By putting the shared goal of improving student outcomes at the center, we can begin to address some of the biggest unmet needs in education. We are pleased to support the summit and look forward to advancing not only conversation but action to improve the education sector in India and globally.”

The day will also include a series of panel discussions and presentations on various segments in the education industry.

The conference also carries a very unique parallel track focusing on impact investments in the education industry. In a world where almost 200 million children don’t have access to education, impact investors are leading a change and making a difference. These investors are helping bridge the gap between the demand and supply of required investments in education through a market-based approach to creating social impact. This parallel track is being organized with an aim of bringing leading investors together to talk about obstacles and solutions to education impact investing in India. Leaders who are a part of this parallel track are Amy Klement, Partner, Omidyar Network; Debashish Mitter, Country Director, India, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation; Will Poole, Co-Founder & Managing Partner, Unitus Seed Fund; Ruchira Shukla, Regional Lead, South Asia, Venture Capital, International Finance Corporation; Pankaj Makkar, Managing Director, Bertelsmann; Ajit Mahadevan, India Director, Acumen;  Sandeep Aneja, Managing Director, Kaizen Private Equity amongst others.

News Corp VCCircle has always associated with causes of social benefit and business benefits and is hopeful that this conference will increase the quantity and quality of investments within the education sector.
