15 April, 2014

Economic affairs secretary Arvind Mayaram has been named finance secretary. He is replacing Sumit Bose who retired last month, according to a report in The Economic Times.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved that Arvind Mayaram, secretary, department of economic affairs, may be designated as finance secretary,” an official statement said on Tuesday.

Mayaram, a 1978 batch Rajasthan cadre IAS officer, has been holding the charge as economic affairs secretary since 2012 and will continue to look after the department of economic affairs.

The post of finance secretary has been lying vacant after Bose retired on March 31.

Finance secretary is the senior-most IAS officer in the finance ministry. Besides Mayaram, the other secretaries in the ministry are Rajiv Takru (revenue secretary), RP Watal (expenditure secretary), Ravi Mathur (disinvestment secretary) and Gurdayal Sandhu (financial services secretary).
