Amira Nature Foods acquires specialty rice brands in Germany

Amira Nature Foods Ltd, a provider of Indian basmati rice, has acquired a portfolio of packaged specialty rice brands from a German firm Euro Basmati GmbH, it said in a statement.

The specialty rice brands, which are primarily sold in Germany, include Al Amir, Al Hakim, Bano, Dalia, Hanna and Shah Pari.

Amira Nature Foods, which is listed on The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), first entered the German market through its acquisition of Basmati Rice GmbH in December 2013.

The unit, which is now called Amira Basmati Rice GmbH Eur, sells its Amira, Atry, Sadry, Sativa, Scheherazade and Sultan brands through more than 4,000 stores and retailers such as Edeka, Metro and Rewe in Germany and in neighbouring European countries.

The addition of the new brands from Euro Basmati GmbH will help the company strengthen its presence in the key markets of Hamburg and Berlin, Tobias Strerath, CEO of Amira Basmati Rice GmbH Eur, said.

Karan A Chanana, Amira Nature Foods’ chairman and CEO, said, with the acquisition, the firm sees many opportunities to expand its global business.

Amira Nature Foods, which was founded in 1915, provides branded packaged specialty rice and other food products, with sales across five continents. Its manufacturing facility is located in Gurgaon, India.

The company primarily sells basmati rice under its flagship Amira brand and other third-party brands. The firm’s global headquarters is in Dubai, UAE. It also has offices in India, Malaysia, Singapore, Germany, the UK and the US.

There has been some investor activity in the space. In July last year, public-listed rice exporter and marketer LT Foods Ltd acquired the 817 Elephant brand of rice from its Amritsar-based parent company Deva Singh Sham Singh.

This followed a deal by LT Foods to buy the rice export business from consumer goods major Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL).
