Amarchand & Mangaldas adds 15 new partners including 2 lateral partners

Law firm Amarchand& Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co has added as many as 15 new partners, taking the total number of partners to 84 across its seven offices. It has elevated 13 of its principal associates as partners besides adding two as lateral partners. Bulk of the promotions have happened in Delhi (seven), followed by Mumbai (five) and Bangalore (one).

The firm has also brought in Sandip Beri and Yashojit Mitra as lateral partners at its Delhi and Mumbai offices, respectively.

Beri has close to three decades of experience as an in-house counsel and as an external lawyer. He started his career with Sidley Austin in Chicago in 1995 and worked there till 2000. Beri also worked as general counsel and head of government relations at GE Capital India. After a long stint at GE Capital headquarters in the US, Beri was general counsel for the South Asia region with Citibank, which was his last in-house assignment before he decided to move back into private practice. He did his Juris Doctor in Law from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

This is the third lateral admission to partnership at the New Delhi office. Over the last two months the firm has added Nikhil Narayanan, who was previously with White and Case, London; and Ajit Warrier, who was earlier with Luthra and Luthra.

With this the firm has added 10 new partners in Delhi recently. This follows the exits of Suhaan Mukerji, who left to join the office of the adviser to the prime minister in May 2013 and Vijayendra Pratap Singh, who was transferred within the firm to the litigation department at its Mumbai office in June 2013.

A graduate of law from Symbiosis Society’s Law College, Pune, Mitra joined Amarchand & Mangaldas from Economic Law Practice (ELP) where he was a partner and played an important role in the growth of the corporate and investment fund practice. He specialises in M&A and private equity.

Cyril Shroff, managing partner, Amarchand & Mangaldas, said Mitra will add depth to the firm’s private equity practice.

Amarchand & Mangaldas has also promoted 13 principal associates as partners across its Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore offices.

Seven of the elevated lawyers are in corporate practice area, two are in banking and finance while two are in project and project finance. It has also elevated one each as partner in capital markets and dispute resolution teams.

The corporate team of the firm includes Anubhuti Agarwal, Arvind Sharma, Indranath Bishnu, Pooja Mahajan, Saurav Kumar, Shruti Kinra and Vandana Sekhri. Anubhuti and Indranath joined the firm in 2005.

An NLSIU, Bangalore graduate, Anubhuti has experience in retail, civil aviation and defence. Arvind and Pooja joined the firm in 2007. Arvind specialises in telecom, media and entertainment, pharma, automobiles, retail trade, infrastructure and finance while Pooja has been extensively involved in matters pertaining to M&A, foreign investments, banking and NBFCs, payment systems and general corporate advisory.

Shruti and Saurav joined the firm in 2004. Shruti focuses on general corporate, mergers and acquisitions and takeover code; and Saurav works in the corporate practice of the firm. Vandana joined the firm in last May and specialises in M&A and PE.

The firm has also promoted Joseph Jimmy and Prashany Venkatesh for its banking and finance sector. Joseph joined the firm in 2009 and specialises in financing, structured finance, corporate debt restructuring, trade finance and consumer banking. Prashant, who joined the firm last year from Linklaters, will develop  the international banking practice.

Ramanuj Kumar and VR Neelakantan have been promoted to the project and finance sector. Ramanuj focuses on electricity regulation, infrastructure projects, nuclear energy, electricity and mining while Neelakantan focuses on project and project finance, general corporate and project equity.

Abhimanyu Bhattacharya has been elevated in the capital market team. He joined the firm in 2006 and primarily focuses on equity capital markets, including IPOs/FPOs, rights and QIPs. Dhruv Dewan, who joined the firm in 2004, has been elevated as partner in the dispute resolution team. His focus areas are constitutional law, administrative law and insolvency.
