Nexus India Capital-Backed Free Web Meeting Startup Dimdim Launches

Indians-founded free web meeting services startup Dimdim has been launched at DEMOFall 2007 in the US. The company is touted to be a challenger to Cisco Systems’ WebEx and Microsoft’s Placeware (see GigaOm).
The Burlington, Massachusetts-based company has received $2.5 million funding from Draper Richards, Index Ventures and Nexus Capital India. Dimdim is a browser-based service that allows anybody to share their desktop, show slides, as well as talk, listen, chat, and broadcast via webcam. The good thing is it's available for free and there is no software to download for attendees. It's apparently a business class service that can be can be used for small gatherings, to seminars with hundreds of attendees, the company claims.
The release says that dimdim has already been downloaded more than 120,000 times (I am yet to download one). dimdim's co-founders are DD Ganguly (CEO), who was founder and CEO of Advanced Internet Management (acquired by Computer Associates), and Prakash Khot, co-founder and CTO of dimdim who previously led CA's radio-frequency identification (RFID) Group as CTO.
It remains to be seen whether Dimdim can beat players like WeBex and GoToMeeting.

indyank,

cool Sundar...Wish you good luck and i love FOSS culture...

Sundar,

Hello Sahad,

This is Sundar from dimdim.com. Thanks for the writeup on Dimdim. Dimdim is offered both as a free hosted service (where the attendees don't have to download or install anything) or you can download the open source server yourself and use Dimdim from your own hardware. The open source server has been downloaded many times from sourceforge.net which is a repository of open source software.

Please don't hesitate to email me if you have any queries.

Regards,
~sundar

Sahad,

Mohit,
You are right, that was confusing. Attendees need not download. Only the hosts need to download.
Thanks for pointing that out.

mohit,
