What Is Social Networking?

You have heard of the social networking websites like MySpace, Facebook, Orkut or professional networking sites like LinkedIn, but haven't really used them or don't know why they exist.

You may want to know why Facebook is the fastest growing social networking site, why the first SN Friendster failed, and why LinkedIn is a popular professional network as against Ryze, and why several vertical social networks like Dogster (for dog lovers) and Catsters (cat owners) are springing up. At the end of it all, will they all make money?

Mark Glazer, a media columnist, has written an excellent article on the phenomenon, charting its history and the current trends, business models etc.

Read it here, and get up to speed on the new social media trends.

Abhishek Gupta,

Hi,

I agree to what you have pointed out. I think, the people who are unsatisfieed with the services and format of existing site will switch on to another site. This is what the new company is proposing - new format with much more ease and efficient search.

In my opinion eventually there would be a consolidation and only 2-3 sites will be the dominant players. However the small ones will also make money while getting merged or acquired. So there .. the logic of the crowd comming in Social networking.

One things which really puzzles is that what would the consumer do with so many new social/professional networking sites.
Also, if he already has a no of contacts/friends on an existing networking site, why would he move on to a new site with all his baggage.
So,are the new social networking sites adding any value to the space,I'm afraid the answer is no !
